Golden Pufferfish

The Golden Pufferfish (Arothron meleagris) is a semi-aggressive species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its brilliant golden coloration (sometimes with white spotting), striking patterns, curious personality, and large, expressive eyes.

Males typically display slightly bolder coloration and more territorial behavior, while females/juveniles are often less aggressive and may show lighter or mottled markings.

They reach about 18 inches in adult size and should be housed in aquariums of at least 180 gallons. Provide ample live rock for grazing, caves and hiding spots, as well as open swimming space, along with stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temp ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4). A secure lid is essential since puffers can jump.

Diet should consist of meaty foods such as shrimp, squid, clams, mussels, krill, and occasional hard-shelled invertebrates to help wear down their continuously growing teeth. They may also accept prepared frozen foods and high-quality pellets.

With proper care, this fish makes a standout centerpiece for large aquariums, both for its beauty and engaging personality.
