Ghost Weedy Pipefish

The Ghost Weedy Pipefish (Solenostomus paradoxus) is a peaceful species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its delicate, leaf-like body extensions that provide excellent camouflage, semi-transparent appearance, and ethereal, floating movements resembling drifting seaweed. Males typically do not carry eggs, as this species is ovoviviparous and the female carries fertilized eggs in specialized pelvic fins until they hatch, while females/juveniles display the same weedy, camouflaged body shape and are slightly smaller. They reach about 6–9 inches in length and should be housed in aquariums of at least 50 gallons.

Provide plenty of live rock with dense hiding spots, patches of macroalgae or artificial seaweed for cover, a fine sandbed, and gentle water flow. Maintain stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temp ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4), and ensure a secure lid, as they are slow swimmers prone to being sucked into filtration or jumping.

Diet should consist of live or frozen mysis shrimp, copepods, and other small meaty planktonic foods. They are delicate feeders and often require live foods initially. With proper care, this fish makes a captivating and highly ornamental addition to a peaceful marine or reef aquarium.
