Ghost Mantis Shrimp

The Ghost Mantis Shrimp (Odontodactylus scyllarus) is an aggressive species that is not reef-safe, admired for its brilliant coloration, intricate patterns, and powerful smashing claws. Males typically display brighter, more intense colors, while females and juveniles tend to be less vivid but still striking. They reach about 6–7 inches in length and should be housed in aquariums of at least 30 gallons. Provide a sandbed, sturdy live rock, and plenty of secure hiding spots, along with stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temperature 72–79°F, pH 8.1–8.4). A secure lid is essential, as mantis shrimp are strong and capable escape artists. Their diet should consist of meaty foods such as shrimp, crabs, snails, and other crustaceans, which allow them to exhibit their natural hunting behavior. With proper care, the Ghost Mantis Shrimp makes a fascinating and standout addition to specialized aquariums.
