Garibaldi Damselfish, Juvenile

The Garibaldi Damselfish, Juvenile (Hypsypops rubicundus) is a semi-aggressive species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its brilliant orange coloration with neon blue juvenile spots, bold personality, and hardy nature.

Males typically establish and aggressively defend territories, often maintaining small nests where they attract females to spawn, while females/juveniles exhibit slightly less territorial behavior but still display strong dominance in confined spaces.

They reach about 12–14 inches as adults, making them the largest damselfish species, and should be housed in aquariums of at least 100 gallons.

Provide ample live rock for territories and hiding spots, as well as open swimming space, stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temp ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4), and a secure lid since many species are prone to jumping.

Diet should consist of a varied mix of mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, copepods, high-quality pellets, marine algae, and spirulina-based foods, and with proper care this fish makes a standout addition to the aquarium thanks to its vibrant colors and commanding presence.
