Garibaldi Damselfish

Garibaldi Damselfish (Hypsypops rubicundus) is an aggressive species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its brilliant orange coloration, bold personality, and large size (the largest damselfish species).

Males typically become territorial, especially during breeding, and will aggressively guard nests and surrounding areas. Females/juveniles are slightly smaller, and juveniles often display bright blue spots on their bodies that fade as they mature.

They reach about 12–14 inches (30–35 cm) in length and should be housed in aquariums of at least 100–125 gallons (larger is preferred due to their size and aggression). Provide ample live rock for territory and hiding spots, plus open swimming space, stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temp ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4), and a secure lid since many species are prone to jumping.

Diet should consist of a varied mix of meaty foods (mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, chopped seafood), high-quality pellets, and some algae or herbivore preparations, and with proper care this fish makes a standout centerpiece addition to the aquarium.
