The Galapagensis Shrimp (Lysmata galapagensis) is a peaceful species that is reef-safe, admired for its brilliant red-and-white coloration, long white antennae, and active cleaning behavior. Males typically resemble females in appearance since these shrimp are hermaphroditic (each individual functions as both male and female at different times), while juveniles are usually smaller and less vibrant until maturity. They reach about 2 inches and should be housed in aquariums of at least 20 gallons.
Provide ample live rock and hiding spots to mimic their natural reef environment, along with stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temp ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4), and a secure lid since many shrimp are prone to escaping. Diet should consist of mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, pellets, and occasionally algae or detritus, and with proper care this shrimp makes a standout addition to the aquarium as both a cleaner and a visually striking species.
