The Frostfin Cardinalfish (Ostorhinchus hoevenii) is a peaceful species that is reef-safe, admired for its delicate frosted-white fins contrasting against a warm orange to reddish body, subtle vertical stripes, and moderate size. Males typically display slightly brighter coloration and may have more intense fin markings during breeding, while females and juveniles show softer hues with less distinct patterns. They reach about 3 to 4 inches in adult size and should be housed in aquariums of at least 30 gallons.
Provide a sandbed with plenty of live rock and hiding spots such as caves and crevices, as well as some open swimming space. Maintain stable water parameters with salinity around 1.020-1.025, temperature between 72-79°F, and pH from 8.1-8.4. A secure lid is important since cardinalfish are known to be jumpers.
Diet should consist of meaty foods including mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, copepods, and quality pellets or flakes. With proper care, the Frostfin Cardinalfish makes a graceful and peaceful addition to reef aquariums.
