Flathead Perch

Flathead Perch (Rainfordia opercularis) is a semi-aggressive species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its unique flattened head shape, striking pattern of spots and stripes, and interesting hunting behavior. Males typically exhibit slightly brighter coloration and may defend small territories, while females/juveniles are less vividly marked and more reclusive. They reach about 6 inches and should be housed in aquariums of at least 55 gallons.

Provide live rock with plenty of caves and crevices for hiding, along with open swimming space, stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temp ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4), and a secure lid, as this species can be prone to jumping. Diet should consist of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, small crustaceans, chopped seafood, and occasionally live feeders. With proper care, the Flathead Perch makes a fascinating and visually striking addition to marine aquariums.
