The Flame Pygmy Goby (Trimma macrophthalmum) is a peaceful species that is reef-safe, admired for its brilliant red-orange body, tiny size, and vibrant personality despite its small stature. Males typically exhibit slightly brighter coloration and may show more confidence in display, while females/juveniles are smaller and more subtly colored. They reach about 1 inch in length and should be housed in aquariums of at least 5–10 gallons, though they thrive best in established nano reef setups.
Provide ample live rock for perching and hiding spots, a sandy substrate, and open swimming areas, along with stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temp ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4). A secure lid is essential, as even small gobies are prone to jumping. Diet should consist of enriched brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, copepods, finely crushed pellets, and other suitably small frozen or live foods. With proper care, this fish makes a striking and active addition to nano and reef aquariums, admired for its bold color and endearing behavior.
