The Flame Hawkfish (Neocirrhites armatus) is one of the most popular marine aquarium fish, celebrated for its striking color, hardiness, and engaging personality. Its small adult size makes it a suitable inhabitant for aquariums of 30 gallons or larger, provided there is ample live rock structure to serve as perches and hiding places. Lacking a swim bladder, this fish spends its time "hopping" or perching on rocks and corals, exhibiting the characteristic "hawk-like" behavior for which the family is named. It is a carnivore and will readily accept a varied diet of meaty foods, such as enriched frozen mysis shrimp, chopped clam, and marine pellets. The Flame Hawkfish is considered reef-safe with caution: it will not typically bother stony or soft corals, but it is an active and known predator of small, mobile invertebrates, including ornamental shrimp, feather duster worms, and small crabs/snails. It should be the last fish introduced to a community tank to limit territorial aggression.
