Five Lined Cardinalfish

The Five Lined Cardinalfish (Cheilodipterus quinquelineatus) is a semi-aggressive species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its distinctive five vertical black lines running along a silver to reddish body, moderate size, and unique patterning. Males typically display more vibrant coloration and may have slightly elongated fins during breeding periods, while females and juveniles tend to have softer colors and less pronounced markings. They reach about 6 inches in adult size and should be housed in aquariums of at least 55 gallons.

Provide live rock formations with plenty of caves and crevices for hiding, along with open swimming areas to accommodate their active nature. Maintain stable water parameters with salinity around 1.020-1.025, temperature between 72-79°F, and pH from 8.1-8.4. A secure lid is essential since many cardinalfish species can be prone to jumping.

Diet should consist of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, copepods, and high-quality pellets or flakes. With proper care, the Five Lined Cardinalfish makes a striking and dynamic addition to a marine aquarium.
