The Finescale Triggerfish (Balistes polylepis) is an aggressive species that is not reef-safe, admired for its robust, deep, and compressed body, gray coloration with dark irregular spots, prominent first dorsal spine, and strong jaws.
Males and females look similar, with no significant external differences. They can reach up to 30 inches in length and should be housed in aquariums of at least 200 gallons. Their environment should include a sandy substrate with rubble and seashells, ample rockwork with caves and crevices for hiding, and open swimming space.
Stable water parameters are essential, with salinity around 1.020–1.025, temperature 72–78°F, and pH 8.1–8.4, along with a secure lid since triggerfish are prone to jumping. The diet should consist of small fish, crustaceans, mollusks, and other meaty foods, and with proper care, this species can become a striking and standout addition to a large marine aquarium.
