Fine Scaled Dottyback

The Fine Scaled Dottyback (Lubbockichthys multisquamatus) is a peaceful species that is reef-safe, admired for its delicate, fine body scaling, subtle coloration (often pale with iridescent hues), small size, and elusive nature. This lesser-known dottyback is valued for its calm demeanor and compatibility in peaceful reef environments, especially nano or species-specific tanks.

Males typically display slightly more vivid or defined coloration and may exhibit subtle territorial behaviors, especially when housed with other males. Females and juveniles tend to be more muted in color and are generally more passive.

They reach about 2 inches in adult size and should be housed in aquariums of at least 15–20 gallons, ideally with a well-established reef environment. Provide live rock with small caves and crevices to mimic their natural habitat and offer plenty of hiding spots, as this species is shy and reclusive by nature.

Maintain stable water parameters:

• Salinity: ~1.020–1.025

• Temperature: ~72–79°F

• pH: ~8.1–8.4

A secure lid is recommended, even though they are not known to be frequent jumpers—precaution is always best.

Diet should consist of small frozen foods like mysis and brine shrimp, copepods, finely minced seafood, and high-quality micro-pellets. Feed small amounts multiple times a day, as they tend to be cautious, slow feeders.

With proper care, the Fine Scaled Dottyback makes a delicate and peaceful addition to nano or community reef aquariums. Unlike most dottybacks, it is not aggressive, making it suitable for cohabitation with small gobies, blennies, and peaceful inverts.
