Female Brown Bird Wrasse

Brown Bird Wrasse (Gomphosus varius) is a semi-aggressive species that is reef-safe with caution, especially for small invertebrates. Males are striking emerald to bluish-green with bright yellow accents and a long beak-like snout; females are more muted with brownish-cream tones, black or brown mid-body shading, and orange/red striping on the snout and through the eye. It grows to about 11-inches in adult size. Best kept in aquariums of at least 125 gallons, with plenty of live rock for hiding and grazing, moderate flow, open swimming space, a secure lid since it’s a jumper, and very stable water parameters. Diet should include carnivorous fare krill, shrimp, squid, mollusks, and other meaty foods alongside high-quality pellets or frozen foods when feeding reliably.
