The Feather Carpet Anemone (Stichodactyla sp.) is an invertebrate species that is considered semi-aggressive and reef-safe with caution, as its powerful stinging tentacles can harm nearby corals and capture unsuspecting fish. It is admired for its vibrant coloration, feather-like tentacle patterns, and impressive size, making it a striking centerpiece in a marine aquarium.

Males and females of this species are not visually distinguishable, as anemones do not display sexual dimorphism; however, juveniles are generally smaller and may vary in color intensity compared to mature specimens. A fully grown Feather Carpet Anemone can reach about 12–18 inches across and should be housed in an aquarium of at least 75 gallons, though larger systems provide more stability and room for expansion.

They prefer to settle into a deep sandbed or among live rock crevices where they can firmly attach their foot. Strong lighting (to support their symbiotic zooxanthellae) and moderate to strong, indirect water flow are essential for long-term health. Stable water conditions should be maintained, with a salinity of 1.020–1.025, temperature range of 72–79°F, and pH between 8.1–8.4. A secure aquarium lid is recommended, not because the anemone moves out, but because startled fish may leap when coming into contact with its tentacles.

While they rely heavily on photosynthesis, Feather Carpet Anemones also benefit from supplemental feeding. Their diet should include mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, krill, chopped silversides, and other meaty marine foods, offered once or twice per week. With proper care, this unique anemone thrives as a showpiece specimen, often hosting clownfish species and adding both movement and brilliant color to the reef environment.
