Fantail Filefish

The Fantail Filefish (Pervagor spilosoma) is a semi-aggressive species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its striking tan body adorned with black spots, bright yellow dorsal fins, and a vibrant orange tail, as well as its unique laterally compressed body and graceful swimming style. Males are typically more brightly colored, especially on the tail and fins, and may display territorial behavior, while females and juveniles are smaller with more subdued coloration.

They reach about 6–8 inches in length and should be housed in aquariums of at least 55 gallons. Their environment should include a sandbed, plenty of live rock, hiding spots such as caves or crevices, and open swimming areas. Maintaining stable water parameters—salinity around 1.020–1.025, temperature between 72–79°F, and pH 8.1–8.4—is essential, and a secure lid is recommended since these fish are prone to jumping.

The Fantail Filefish is an omnivore, thriving on a diet of mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, copepods, high-quality pellets, and marine algae, with occasional seaweed for natural grazing. With proper care, this species becomes a striking and interactive addition to the marine aquarium, adding both color and personality to the tank.
