Fan Bellied Leatherjacket Filefish

The Fan Bellied Leatherjacket Filefish (Monacanthus chinensis) is a semi-aggressive species that is not reef-safe, admired for its distinctive fan-shaped belly, mottled coloration, unique texture, medium-to-large size, and engaging swimming behavior. Males are typically more colorful with a pronounced belly fan and may display territorial behavior, while females and juveniles are smaller, less vividly colored, and more streamlined in appearance. They reach about 15 inches in length and should be housed in aquariums of at least 120 gallons. The tank should provide a sandbed, live rock, plenty of hiding spots, and open swimming space, along with stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temperature ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4), and a secure lid since this species is prone to jumping. Their diet should consist of mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, copepods, pellets, and algae, and with proper care, this fish makes a standout addition to a marine aquarium.
