False Cleanerfish Blenny

The False Cleanerfish Blenny (Aspidontus taeniatus) is a semi-aggressive species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its exceptional mimicry of the cleaner wrasse, striking coloration and patterns, compact size, and unique behavior that makes it a fascinating addition to reef aquariums. Males typically display more vivid coloration with bolder pattern contrast, using mimicry to interact with other fish and establish territory. Females and juveniles are slightly duller in color but retain the characteristic markings that enable them to blend in within reef environments.

They reach about 3–4 inches in length and should be housed in aquariums of at least 30 gallons. The ideal setup includes a sandbed, live rock for grazing, plenty of hiding spots, and open swimming space to encourage natural behavior. Stable water parameters — salinity ~1.020–1.025, temperature ~72–79°F (22–26°C), and pH ~8.1–8.4 — are essential for their health. A secure lid is important since they are known to jump.

Their diet should consist of mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, copepods, high-quality marine pellets, small crustaceans, and occasional algae. With proper care, this species not only thrives but also becomes a captivating centerpiece in a reef aquarium due to its beauty and behavioral charm.
