The Emerald Crab (Mythrax sculptus) is a peaceful species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its vibrant emerald-green coloration, compact body shape, algae-eating behavior, and its usefulness in controlling bubble algae (Valonia) in reef tanks.

Males typically have slightly larger, more robust claws and broader carapaces, while females/juveniles are generally smaller with narrower bodies and claws, often seen hiding more frequently among live rock.

They reach about 2 to 2.5 inches in adult size and should be housed in aquariums of at least 10 gallons, though larger tanks are recommended for multiple individuals.

Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding, a sandbed, and some shaded or low-light areas, along with stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temp ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4). A secure lid is recommended—not because they jump, but because they can climb equipment and escape if given the chance.

Diet should consist of algae (especially bubble algae), supplemented with mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, sinking pellets, seaweed sheets (nori), and other plant-based foods. They are natural scavengers and help clean up detritus, but may nip at corals or small inverts if underfed.

With proper care, this crab makes a valuable and attractive addition to reef aquariums, especially for hobbyists looking for natural algae control.
