Elongate Dottyback

The Elongate Dottyback (Pseudochromis elongatus) is a semi-aggressive species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its slender, elongated body, intense iridescent purple-to-blue coloration, and striking presence in nano and mid-sized reef aquariums. Its streamlined form and electric color make it a captivating addition for aquarists seeking something both elegant and bold.

Males typically grow slightly larger and may display more intense coloration, particularly when asserting dominance or during breeding behavior. Females and juveniles tend to be smaller and can appear slightly paler or more reserved in behavior.

They reach about 2.5 to 3 inches in adult size and should be housed in aquariums of at least 20 to 30 gallons. Provide plenty of live rock with narrow caves, ledges, and crevices for hiding and territorial behavior, along with some open swimming space.

• Temperature: ~72–79°F

• pH: ~8.1–8.4

A secure lid is essential, as this species is prone to jumping when startled or during territorial chases.

Diet should consist of mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, copepods, finely chopped marine meats, high-quality pellets, and flakes. Occasional enrichment with frozen marine blends helps support coloration and vitality.

With proper care, the Elongate Dottyback makes a stunning, hardy, and relatively low-maintenance addition to reef tanks. While it can be kept successfully with a variety of tankmates, it may become territorial toward other dottybacks or similarly shaped species, especially in smaller systems—so tankmate selection and rockwork layout should be planned accordingly.
