The Electric Stingray (Torpedo marmoratus) is a generally peaceful but somewhat unpredictable species that is not reef-safe, admired for its striking marbled coloration, rounded disc shape, and unique ability to generate electric discharges for defense and hunting. This unusual feature makes it a fascinating yet challenging fish for advanced aquarists. Males typically remain smaller and are distinguished by the presence of claspers near the pelvic fins, while females and juveniles grow larger and rounder in body form.
They can reach about 47 inches in length and require aquariums of at least 800–1,000 gallons, as they are powerful swimmers and need substantial space to thrive. The tank should provide a deep sandy substrate for resting and burying, along with open swimming areas. Rockwork should be arranged carefully to avoid injury, and hiding spots or shaded areas are beneficial. Stable water parameters are critical, with salinity maintained between 1.020 and 1.025, temperature between 72 and 79°F, and pH from 8.1 to 8.4. A secure lid is necessary, as stingrays may attempt to jump.
Their diet should consist mainly of meaty marine foods such as fish, squid, shrimp, and crustaceans, as they are active predators. They do not accept pellets or prepared foods readily and must be fed fresh or frozen prey items. With proper care and respect for its special requirements, the Electric Stingray makes a rare and extraordinary addition for highly experienced marine aquarists.
