Dwarf Zebra Lionfish (Dendrochirus zebra) is an aggressive predatory species that is not reef-safe as it will consume any fish, shrimp, or crab small enough to fit in its mouth. This stunning predator displays bold black and white vertical stripes reminiscent of a zebra's pattern across its compact body with dramatically elongated, ornate pectoral fins that spread like delicate fans. The high-contrast banding and flowing fins create one of the most striking appearances in the lionfish family, making it a true showstopper. It can reach about 7 inches in adult size. Best kept in tanks of at least 55 gallons or more, with plenty of caves, ledges, and rocky territories for hunting, moderate water flow, stable water parameters, and extreme caution around the venomous spines which deliver potent stings capable of causing severe pain and medical emergencies. Its diet should include a mix of live or frozen meaty foods—small fish, mysid shrimp, ghost shrimp, feeder guppies—as well as marine pellets once acclimated, though this species often shows strong preference for live prey and may require patience during the weaning process.
