The Dwarf Hawkfish (Cirrhitichthys falco), also commonly known as the Falco Hawkfish, is a highly popular and exceptionally hardy species prized for its small size and engaging "perch and pounce" personality. Due to its maximum size of about 3 inches, it is well-suited for smaller aquariums, requiring a minimum of 30 gallons with plenty of live rock to provide ledges and perching spots. As a dedicated carnivore, its diet must consist of meaty marine foods, such as mysis shrimp, chopped clam, and enriched brine shrimp, which it will readily accept, including high-quality pellets and flakes. It is considered reef-safe with a major caveat: while it will not typically harm corals, it is a swift and effective predator of small mobile invertebrates, including ornamental shrimp (especially smaller ones or those that have just molted) and very small crabs. This fish is a protogynous hermaphrodite, meaning all individuals start as female, and the largest, most dominant individual will change to male. It should generally be kept singly.
