Dwarf Goatfish

Dwarf Goatfish (Upeneus parvus) is a peaceful species that is reef-safe with caution, as it may consume very small ornamental shrimp and tiny crabs but poses no threat to corals or larger invertebrates. This charming smaller goatfish displays a pale pink to cream body with distinctive red stripes and markings, along with the characteristic twin barbels used for constantly probing sand and rockwork in search of small prey and detritus. The delicate coloration and busy foraging behavior make it an engaging addition that's always active and exploring. It can reach about 4-5 inches in adult size. Best kept in tanks of at least 55 gallons or more with a sand bed for natural foraging behavior, stable water parameters, and peaceful tankmates, though they appreciate having some open swimming space and multiple hiding spots among rockwork. Its diet should include a mix of small meaty foods—mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, small marine pellets—along with blackworms or other small live foods, as this carnivorous species requires frequent small feedings throughout the day to satisfy its active metabolism and natural grazing instincts.
