Dusky Wrasse (Halichoeres marginatus) is a reef-safe species with a semi-aggressive temperament that shines when properly cared for, turning from subtle juveniles into breathtaking adults. Juveniles and females start with muted tones—dark browns or blacks with pale stripes—while mature males erupt in dazzling hues of green, blue, red, and yellow patches, with a striking green crescent at the base of the tail and bold fin colors. It reaches about 7 inches adult size. Best housed in tanks of at least 75 gallons, with a deep fine sandbed for burying/resting, abundant live rock for hiding and grazing, stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020-1.025, temp ~75-82°F, pH ~8.1-8.4), and a tight lid since this wrasse is an expert jumper. Diet should include small hard-shelled prey like crustaceans and mollusks, plus frozen mysis, brine shrimp, live copepods, and quality marine pellets.
