Dusky Tilefish

The Dusky Tilefish (Hoplolatilus cuniculus) is a peaceful species that is reef-safe, admired for its elongated body, subtle silvery to dusky coloration, graceful swimming style, and fascinating burrow-digging behavior. Like other tilefish, it is an active and intelligent fish that contributes dynamic movement and interest to aquariums.

Males typically grow slightly larger, may display more vivid body coloration, and can exhibit courtship or territorial displays around burrows, while females and juveniles remain smaller with more subdued colors and less pronounced behaviors.

They reach about 8–9 inches in length and should be housed in aquariums of at least 75 gallons, with larger tanks strongly recommended to accommodate their size and activity level. Provide a deep sandbed for burrow construction, stable live rock for structure and security, and open swimming areas. A very secure, tight-fitting lid is essential, as tilefish are notorious jumpers when startled.

Maintain stable water parameters: salinity around 1.020–1.025, temperature between 72–79°F, and pH between 8.1–8.4.

Their diet should consist of mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, finely chopped meaty foods such as shrimp or clam, copepods, and high-quality pellets formulated for carnivores. Feed small portions multiple times daily to match their active metabolism.

With proper care, the Dusky Tilefish makes a standout addition to large reef or fish-only aquariums, admired for its unique burrowing behavior, peaceful nature, and constant activity in the mid-water column.
