Dragon Wrasse (Novaculichthys taeniourus) is a jaw-dropping reef fish prized by seasoned aquarists for its dramatic transformation from juvenile to adult, bold behavior, and eye-catching coloration that few fish can match. Juveniles sport filament-like dorsal rays, a “cowlick” appearance over the forehead, and patterns that mimic drifting algae; adults develop dark green-brown bodies with white speckled scales, red belly, and striking facial stripes with two black spots before the dorsal. It grows to about 10 inches, requires at least 80 gallons, deep fine sand for burying and sleep, plenty of live rock and hiding spots, stable water (salinity ~1.020-1.025; temp ~72-78°F; pH ~8.1-8.4), and a tight lid because this wrasse is an expert jumper. Diet must be carnivorous and varied: live/frozen invertebrates (mollusks, crustaceans, worms), squid, shrimp, chopped seafood, plus occasional prepared marine-meat mixes.
