Double Striped Dottyback

The Double Striped Dottyback (Pseudochromis bitaeniatus) is a semi-aggressive species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its slender body shape, striking twin horizontal stripes (typically bright blue or purple on a yellow to orange body), moderate size, and bold temperament. Its vivid pattern and active personality make it a favorite among aquarists who appreciate colorful, engaging fish.

Males typically grow slightly larger and may show more intense coloration, especially during courtship or territorial displays, while females and juveniles are smaller, slightly duller in color, and less assertive in behavior.

They reach about 3 to 3.5 inches in adult size and should be housed in aquariums of at least 30 gallons, especially when kept with other semi-aggressive species or similar fish. Provide plenty of live rock with caves and hiding spots, as these fish like to dart in and out of crevices and may establish a territory. Also include open swimming space to allow for natural movement and exploration.

A secure, tight-fitting lid is crucial, as this species is known for jumping—especially when spooked or introduced to a new environment.

Diet should consist of mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, copepods, finely chopped marine meats, and high-quality pellets or flakes. A varied diet enhances both coloration and vitality.

With proper care, the Double Striped Dottyback makes a colorful and energetic addition to reef aquariums. While generally reef-safe, they may nip at small ornamental shrimp or harass more timid tankmates, so tankmate selection should be done with caution.
