The Dilectus Dottyback (Pseudochromis dilectus) is a semi-aggressive species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its sleek body, vibrant coloration ranging from pinkish-purple to orange hues, small size, and cryptic, darting behavior. Although relatively rare in the aquarium trade, it’s appreciated by enthusiasts for its unique appearance and bold personality in smaller reef systems.
Males typically grow slightly larger and display more vivid coloration, particularly when displaying or during territorial behavior. Females and juveniles are often smaller and less intensely colored, with a more reclusive nature.
They reach about 2.5 to 3 inches in adult size and should be housed in aquariums of at least 20–30 gallons. Provide ample live rock for hiding places and territory, as well as small caves or crevices, which help reduce stress and aggression. Some open swimming space will also support natural behavior.
Maintain stable water parameters:
-
Salinity: ~1.020–1.025
-
Temperature: ~72–79°F
-
pH: ~8.1–8.4
A secure, tight-fitting lid is essential, as dottybacks are known to jump—especially when startled or introduced to a new tank.
Diet should consist of mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, copepods, finely chopped seafood, and high-quality marine pellets or flakes. A varied diet helps maintain coloration and overall health.
With proper care and the right tank setup, the Dilectus Dottyback makes a vibrant and hardy addition to smaller marine aquariums, particularly when housed with tank mates of similar size and temperament. However, due to its territorial nature, it’s best kept singly or with caution around other dottybacks and similarly shaped species.
