Diamond Watchman Goby

The Diamond Watchman Goby (Valenciennea puellaris) is a peaceful species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its sparkling iridescent spots that resemble diamonds across its pale body, graceful sand-sifting behavior, and long slender shape. Males typically are slightly larger with more vibrant diamond-like markings during breeding periods, while females/juveniles are smaller with less pronounced spotting and lighter coloration. They reach about 6 inches and should be housed in aquariums of at least 50 gallons.

Provide a deep sandbed (minimum 3 inches) for burrowing and sand-sifting, plenty of live rock for hiding spots and territory, and open swimming space, stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temp ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4), and a secure lid since gobies can be prone to jumping. Diet should consist of mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, copepods, and quality sinking pellets, and with proper care, this fish makes a fascinating and functional addition to reef aquariums, helping keep the substrate clean.
