The Diadema Dottyback (Pictichromis diadema) is a semi-aggressive species that is reef-safe, admired for its vibrant magenta and yellow coloration, sleek body, hardy nature, and active behavior. Its brilliant colors make it a popular choice for both beginner and advanced marine aquarists.

Males typically grow slightly larger and may display more vivid coloration and territorial behavior, especially when housed with other dottybacks or similar fish. Females and juveniles tend to be smaller, with more subdued coloration and less aggressive tendencies.

They reach about 3 inches in adult size and should be housed in aquariums of at least 20–30 gallons. Provide plenty of live rock with caves and crevices for hiding and establishing territory, along with moderate open swimming space.

Maintain stable water parameters:

  • Salinity: ~1.020–1.025

  • Temperature: ~72–79°F

  • pH: ~8.1–8.4

A secure lid is essential, as dottybacks are known for jumping, especially when startled.

Diet should consist of mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, copepods, high-quality marine pellets or flakes, and occasionally enriched frozen foods to promote color and health.

With proper care and thoughtful tankmate selection, the Diadema Dottyback makes a vibrant, hardy, and lively addition to reef aquariums—especially those under 40 gallons. However, due to its territorial nature, it is best kept singly unless in a very large tank with plenty of space and cover.
