Decorated Goby

The Decorated Goby (Istigobius decoratus) is a peaceful species that is reef-safe, admired for its attractive mottled coloration blending sandy browns with subtle patterns, slender body shape, and active burrowing behavior. Males typically are slightly larger with more pronounced coloration during breeding, often showing brighter patches or enhanced patterns, while females/juveniles are smaller and more subdued in color. They reach about 3 to 4 inches and should be housed in aquariums of at least 20 gallons.

Provide a fine sandbed for burrowing, ample live rock for shelter and hiding spots, and some open swimming space, stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temp ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4), and a secure lid as gobies can be prone to jumping. Diet should consist of mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, copepods, and high-quality sinking pellets, and with proper care, this fish makes a fascinating and lively addition to reef and marine community tanks.
