Dawson's Goby

The Dawson's Goby (Priolepis dawsoni) is a peaceful species that is reef-safe, admired for its tiny size, cryptic nature, and delicate orange to reddish body adorned with faint patterning that allows it to blend beautifully among live rock and coral crevices. This species is perfect for aquarists who enjoy observing more subtle and shy reef inhabitants.

Males typically grow slightly larger, may develop more intense coloration, and can display subtle territorial or courtship behaviors, while females and juveniles remain smaller, with softer markings and less assertive behavior.

They reach about 1.5–2 inches in length and should be housed in aquariums of at least 10 gallons, though larger aquariums with well-established rockwork provide the best conditions. Provide plenty of live rock with caves and crevices for hiding, some sandy or rubble substrate, and calm zones away from overly active fish. A secure lid is necessary, as even small gobies can jump when startled.

Maintain stable water parameters: salinity around 1.020–1.025, temperature between 72–79°F, and pH between 8.1–8.4.

Their diet should consist of mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, copepods, finely chopped meaty foods, and high-quality micro pellets. Because of their small size and shy feeding habits, offering frequent small meals ensures they receive proper nutrition.

With proper care, Dawson’s Goby makes a standout addition to nano and reef aquariums, offering subtle beauty, fascinating cryptic behavior, and peaceful compatibility with other small reef species.
