The Darkstriped Dottyback (Labracinus melanotaenia) is an aggressive species that is not reef-safe, admired for its bold horizontal dark stripes, deep red to maroon body coloration, large adult size, and commanding presence. This species is known for its striking appearance and dominant behavior, making it best suited for predator or species-specific marine setups.

Males typically grow larger and display deeper coloration with more defined striping, especially during mating or territorial displays. Females and juveniles are smaller, with paler coloration and less contrast in pattern, and are generally less aggressive than mature males.

They reach about 6 to 7 inches in adult size and should be housed in aquariums of at least 75 gallons, with larger tanks (100+ gallons) preferred for adult specimens. Provide ample live rock for hiding spots and territory, along with open swimming space. Avoid housing with small, peaceful fish or ornamental shrimp, as this species may harass or eat them.

Maintain stable water parameters:

  • Salinity: ~1.020–1.025

  • Temperature: ~72–79°F

  • pH: ~8.1–8.4

A secure, tight-fitting lid is essential, as this dottyback species is prone to jumping when startled or stressed.

Diet should consist of meaty foods like mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, chopped seafood (squid, shrimp, clam), as well as high-quality carnivorous pellets. They may also accept frozen marine blends and live foods occasionally.

With proper care and thoughtful tank mate selection, the Darkstriped Dottyback makes a bold and visually striking addition to larger, predator-style marine aquariums—but it is not suitable for peaceful community or delicate reef tanks.
