The Darkfin Grouper (Cephalopholis urodelus) is a semi-aggressive species that is considered reef-safe with caution. It is admired for its deep reddish-brown body, distinctive dark fins, and spotted patterns that make it a striking addition to large aquariums.

Males typically grow larger with more intense coloration and stronger finnage, while females and juveniles remain smaller and may display lighter tones. This grouper can reach about 14–16 inches in adulthood and requires a spacious aquarium of at least 180 gallons.

Its environment should include ample live rock with caves and hiding spots for shelter, along with open swimming space to accommodate its natural behavior. The species thrives in stable water conditions, with salinity between 1.020–1.025, temperatures ranging from 72–79°F, and a pH of 8.1–8.4. A secure lid is also necessary, as groupers are prone to jumping.

In terms of diet, the Darkfin Grouper is a carnivorous feeder that should be offered meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, krill, silversides, squid, and other protein-rich marine items, though high-quality carnivore pellets can also be introduced.

With proper care, this grouper becomes a hardy and visually impressive centerpiece fish, best suited for aquarists with large marine systems and suitable tankmates that are too big to be viewed as prey.
