The Dark Moray Eel (Gymnothorax afer) is an aggressive species that is not reef-safe, admired for its solid dark coloration, elongated serpentine body, and impressive predatory presence. Males typically display slightly larger heads with more pronounced jaw musculature, while females/juveniles are slimmer with less defined jaw structure. They reach about 59 inches (150 cm) and should be housed in aquariums of at least 250 gallons.
Provide ample live rock with caves and hiding spots, a deep sandbed for burrowing behavior, and a secure, tight-fitting lid since moray eels are known escape artists. Stable water parameters are essential: salinity 1.020–1.025, temperature 72–79°F, and pH 8.1–8.4.
Diet should consist of meaty foods such as silversides, squid, shrimp, and other marine flesh, offered with feeding tongs to avoid accidental bites. With proper care, this eel becomes a dramatic centerpiece species, though it is best suited for experienced aquarists with large predator tanks.
