The Dark Body Goldentail Eel (Gymnothorax miliaris sp.) is a semi-aggressive species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its striking dark body with golden tail, cryptic behavior, and elongated, slender form.
Males typically show no strong external differences compared to females, as moray eels are not sexually dimorphic, while juveniles tend to be smaller with less pronounced coloration.
They reach about 24–28 inches in length and should be housed in aquariums of at least 75 gallons. Provide ample live rock with caves and hiding spots, a sandy or mixed substrate, and a very secure lid, since eels are notorious escape artists.Stable water parameters are essential (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temperature 72–79°F, pH 8.1–8.4).
Their diet should consist of meaty foods such as silversides, shrimp, squid, krill, and other marine flesh (avoid freshwater feeders). Offer food with feeding tongs, and train gradually to take frozen/prepared foods instead of live prey.
With proper care and a secure environment, the Dark Body Goldentail Eel makes a striking and hardy addition to a predatory or semi-aggressive marine aquarium.
