The Dampier Cardinalfish (Apogon sp. "Dampier") is a peaceful species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its subtle yet attractive coloration with muted tones, delicate patterns, and compact size. Males typically exhibit a slightly deeper body and may show intensified coloration during breeding, while females and juveniles appear slimmer and less vibrant. They reach about 2.5 to 3 inches in adult size and should be housed in aquariums of at least 30 gallons.
Provide ample live rock and hiding spots, along with some open swimming space to mimic their natural reef environment. Maintain stable water parameters with salinity around 1.020-1.025, temperature between 72-79°F, and pH from 8.1-8.4. A secure lid is essential since many cardinalfish species are prone to jumping.
Diet should consist of small meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, copepods, and quality pellets or flakes. With proper care, the Dampier Cardinalfish makes a peaceful and charming addition to the marine aquarium.
