The Dalmatian Eel (Gymnothorax sp.) is a semi-aggressive species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its striking black-and-white spotted coloration, elongated body, and unique predatory behavior. Males typically grow larger and bulkier, while females/juveniles tend to be slimmer with more defined spotting patterns.
They reach about 24–30 inches in adulthood and should be housed in aquariums of at least 125 gallons. Provide ample live rock with caves and hiding spots, a sandy substrate, and secure rockwork, along with stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temp ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4). A tight-fitting, secure lid is crucial since this eel is known for escaping through small openings.
Diet should consist of meaty foods such as shrimp, squid, silversides, krill, and other frozen marine fare. Occasional live feeder foods can be offered but should not be the primary diet. With proper care and respect for its size and feeding habits, the Dalmatian Eel makes a standout, exotic addition to large marine aquariums.
