Cryptic (Histiophryne cryptacanthus)

The Cryptic Anglerfish (Histiophryne cryptacanthus) is a peaceful species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its highly camouflaged appearance, unusual body shape, small size, and ability to mimic sponges or encrusting algae.

Males typically are much smaller and less commonly observed, often leading more reclusive lives, while females/juveniles are more frequently seen, displaying subtle mottled coloration that helps them blend seamlessly into their surroundings. They reach about 2–3 inches and should be housed in aquariums of at least 20 gallons.

Provide plenty of live rock, overhangs, and small crevices for hiding, stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020-1.025, temp ~72-79°F, pH ~8.1-8.4), and a secure lid since many species are prone to jumping.

Diet should consist of live or frozen meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, and small crustaceans. With proper care, this fish makes a standout addition to the aquarium due to its shy nature, masterful camouflage, and rarity in the hobby.
