The Crocea Clam (Tridacna crocea) is a peaceful species that is reef-safe, admired for its vibrant coloration, intricate mantle patterns, compact size, and unique shell-boring ability. Unlike many other clams, it can attach securely to live rock and even burrow into it over time, making it a striking and stable showpiece for reef aquariums.

Males typically release sperm during spawning events, while females/juveniles release eggs, although sex is not externally distinguishable and many clams are protandric (starting male, later capable of producing eggs).

They reach about 6–8 inches in adulthood and should be housed in aquariums of at least 30 gallons. Provide strong lighting (preferably metal halide, T5, or high-output LEDs), stable live rock structures for attachment, and excellent water quality (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temp ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4). A sandbed is optional, but most Crocea clams thrive when attached to solid rockwork in the upper half of the tank where they can receive intense light.

Diet should consist primarily of photosynthesis via their symbiotic zooxanthellae, supplemented by phytoplankton, marine snow, and other fine planktonic foods when small (under 3 inches). Larger specimens generally rely almost entirely on light. With proper care, this clam makes a stunning and long-lived addition to reef aquariums, prized for both its beauty and ecological role.
