Court Jester Goby

The Court Jester Goby (Koumansetta rainfordi) is a peaceful species that is reef-safe, admired for its slender body adorned with bold horizontal orange stripes against a greenish base, delicate swimming style, and usefulness in controlling algae and detritus. This goby is especially prized for its bright coloration and gentle temperament, making it a favorite among reef aquarists.

Males typically grow slightly larger, may show more vivid striping, and can display subtle territorial or courtship behaviors, while females and juveniles remain smaller with softer coloration and less assertive presence.

They reach about 3 inches in length and should be housed in aquariums of at least 20 gallons, though larger tanks provide greater stability and grazing surfaces. Provide a fine sandbed, live rock for grazing and hiding, and open swimming space, along with a secure lid since gobies are prone to jumping.

Maintain stable water parameters: salinity around 1.020–1.025, temperature between 72–79°F, and pH between 8.1–8.4.

Their diet should consist of algae, filamentous microalgae, copepods, mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, and high-quality sinking pellets. They naturally graze on algae and detritus within the aquarium, but supplemental feeding is necessary for long-term health.

With proper care, the Court Jester Goby makes a standout addition to reef aquariums, offering brilliant coloration, algae-grazing benefits, and a peaceful demeanor that complements a variety of tank mates.
