The Cortez Sea Star (Pentaceraster cumingi) is a peaceful species that is not reef-safe, admired for its striking bright orange-red coloration with raised, star-shaped nodules and large, robust size.
Males and females appear similar, while juveniles are smaller and less vividly colored. They reach about 12–14 inches in diameter and should be housed in aquariums of at least 40 gallons. Provide a sandy substrate with live rock for grazing, ample open space for movement, and gentle hiding spots, along with stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temperature ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4) and a secure lid, as sea stars can sometimes climb or topple equipment. Their diet should consist of detritus, small invertebrates, and meaty marine fare such as mysis or brine shrimp, and with proper care, this species makes a captivating centerpiece for marine aquariums.
