Coral Banded Shrimp

The Coral Banded Shrimp (Stenopus hispidus) is a semi-aggressive invertebrate that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its striking red-and-white banded coloration, long white antennae, and claw-like pincers that make it a standout in any marine aquarium. Males typically have slightly larger claws and slimmer bodies, while females are often larger overall and may carry eggs under their abdomen. Adults generally reach about 2–4 inches in size and should be housed in aquariums of at least 30 gallons. They thrive best with plenty of live rock and hiding spots, as they can be territorial and prefer areas to retreat when threatened. Coral Banded Shrimp require stable water parameters (salinity 1.020–1.025, temperature 72–79°F, and pH 8.1–8.4), along with a secure lid, since they can climb and potentially escape. Their diet should consist of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood, although they may also scavenge leftover food from the tank. With proper care and a suitable environment, the Coral Banded Shrimp makes a fascinating and eye-catching addition to a saltwater aquarium.
