Eightband Butterflyfish

My species/animal is a fish — the Eightband Butterflyfish (Chaetodon octofasciatus). It is a peaceful species that is not reef-safe, admired for its striking series of eight vertical black bands across a yellowish-white body, compact size, and refined appearance that makes it highly sought-after by advanced aquarists.

Males typically do not exhibit external sexual dimorphism and look similar to females, although slight variations in size or behavior may be observed during mating. Females/juveniles are nearly identical in appearance to adults, with juveniles often showing slightly less intense coloration that develops with maturity.

They reach about 5 inches in adult size and should be housed in aquariums of at least 70 gallons.

Provide ample live rock for grazing and hiding, moderate flow, and open swimming areas, stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temp ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4), and a secure lid since many species are prone to jumping.

Diet should consist of frozen mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, sponge-based frozen foods, finely chopped seafood, and occasionally pellets or flakes if accepted. This species may require target feeding or training to eat prepared foods, and with proper care this fish makes a standout addition to the aquarium.
