Coney Grouper

The Coney Grouper (Cephalopholis fulva) is a semi-aggressive species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its vibrant reddish-brown to orange coloration with scattered blue spots, striking patterns, and compact size compared to other groupers. Males typically display brighter coloration and may develop a distinctive bicolor phase during spawning, while females and juveniles are smaller, less vividly colored, and may exhibit more cryptic patterns for camouflage. They reach about 12 inches in length and should be housed in aquariums of at least 125 gallons.

Provide ample live rock for hiding spots and territory, along with open swimming space, stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020-1.025, temp ~72-79°F, pH ~8.1-8.4), and a secure lid since many groupers can jump. Diet should consist of a varied carnivorous diet including silversides, shrimp, squid, krill, and other meaty marine foods; they may accept frozen preparations and pellets over time. With proper care, this fish makes a striking and hardy centerpiece for large fish-only or predator-style aquariums.
