Commersoni Anglerfish, Black

The Commersoni Anglerfish, Black (Antennarius commersoni) is a semi-aggressive species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its striking black coloration with intricate mottled patterns, unique “fishing lure” appendage on its head, and impressive camouflage skills.

Males typically are significantly smaller, rarely kept in aquariums, and may attach parasitically to females, while females/juveniles are larger, robust, and display bold contrasting colors that blend well with rocky or coral environments. They reach about 6–8 inches and should be housed in aquariums of at least 50 gallons.

Provide ample live rock and plenty of hiding spots to mimic their natural ambush environment, stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020-1.025, temp ~72-79°F, pH ~8.1-8.4), and a secure lid since they are prone to jumping.

Diet should consist of live or frozen meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, small fish, and occasionally copepods. With proper care, this fish makes a standout addition to the aquarium due to its fascinating hunting behavior and dramatic appearance.
