Comet Wrasse (Labropsis xanthonota) is a rare and visually stunning fish that commands attention in any reef setup. Peaceful in temperament, reef-friendly with most livestock, it sports a striking yellow upper body (dorsal/back area) contrasting with a darker lower half, thin white-striped lateral markings, and the signature “tubelip” or fleshy lips used to feed on coral polyps and mucus. It gets up to about 4 inches long. Because it’s so uncommon, commanding in beauty, and demands good husbandry, this is one that sets your tank apart. Best kept in aquariums of at least 50 gallons, with abundant live rock for hiding and foraging, medium to gentle water flow, stable water conditions, and a tightly sealed lid since wrasses are jumpy. Diet should include meaty coral-associated foods, especially polyps, some coral mucus, supplemented with enriched frozen mysis or brine shrimp and fine quality marine preparations. Juveniles also act as facultative cleaners, which adds ecological value and interest.
