Colored Tube Anemone (Cerianthus sp.) is a semi-aggressive species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its brilliant coloration, long flowing tentacles, and unique burrowing tube structure.
Males typically do not differ visually from females (as with most anemones, they are not sexually dimorphic), while juveniles are smaller and often display less intense coloration until mature.
They reach about 8–12 inches in tentacle span (sometimes larger in the wild) and should be housed in aquariums of at least 50 gallons to allow room for their long stinging tentacles.
Provide a deep sandbed (4+ inches) for tube burrowing, along with ample open space away from corals since their sweeper tentacles can sting neighboring livestock. Stable water parameters are essential: salinity ~1.020–1.025, temperature 72–79°F, pH 8.1–8.4, and a secure lid since some may retract or dislodge when stressed.
Diet should consist of meaty offerings such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, krill, chopped seafood, and occasional pellet or frozen marine foods, as they are nocturnal predators.
With proper care, this striking invertebrate makes a standout, centerpiece addition to the aquarium, best suited for intermediate to advanced hobbyists.
