Colored Malu Anemone

The Colored Malu Anemone (Heteractis malu). It is a semi-aggressive species that is considered reef-safe with caution, admired for its vibrant coloration, unique tentacle patterns, and its ability to host clownfish.

Males and females are not easily distinguishable (anemones are not sexually dimorphic like fish), but juveniles tend to be smaller, with shorter tentacles and less vivid coloration compared to larger adults.

They reach about 8–12 inches in diameter at full size and should be housed in aquariums of at least 40–50 gallons. Provide a deep sandbed for foot attachment, moderate live rock for stability, and low to moderate flow areas so the anemone can settle securely.

Maintain stable water parameters: salinity 1.020–1.025, temperature 72–79°F, pH 8.1–8.4, and ensure strong reef lighting (as they are photosynthetic and rely on their zooxanthellae). A secure lid is recommended since clownfish hosts and other tankmates may cause movement if the anemone is disturbed.

Diet should consist of occasional meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, and enriched frozen preparations, although most nutrition comes from light and symbiotic algae.
